Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Upgrades to items allow players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.
Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases like eth titans do not vary in their stats following being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They give you an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.
To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen, showing what the expected upgrade stats will be and also the element or material required for the upgrade to take place.
There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, can be put on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a type restriction. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but provide larger bonuses and cannot be used in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix at the end of the item's name. For instance the addition of the suffix Glyph would make the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process differs from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of these items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.
This allows the item to receive upgraded components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Power and it is reset to 0 in the event of failure, or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Each upgrade will require a specific amount of Flightstones or Crests, based on whether the item is at its current level and what slot it is located in. In general, weapons will require more Flightstones to upgrade than other types of equipment.
If an item is not able to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give players the option to transfer it to another person and then re-infuse the item with an upgrade set that is different. This process takes up to two hours and costs the same amount of materials however it will have a lower chance of success.
Engineers may utilize a level to compare the height of the building against a known point, like the benchmark. This is known as a "level loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. Rerolling

Each upgraded item may have a unique bonus that boosts the power of the item by a fixed percentage or flat value. These bonuses are added to standard affixes. The more you upgrade your product, the higher the chance of receiving an exclusive bonus.
The game also includes number set that grants the player a bonus if three or four upgraded items from the set are installed on a unit. This is an excellent method to add lots of power to a character without spending a lot of money.
